Dr. Godwin is a native South Carolinian. He attended The Citadel and graduated in 1974 with a B.S. in Biology. He then graduated from Medical University of South Carolina in 1978 with his Medical Degree and trained in general surgery at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, completing his residency in 1983.

Dr. Godwin then practiced in his hometown of Cheraw, South Carolina from 1983 until 1985 before moving to Charlotte to join Randolph Surgical Associates. In 1999, Randolph Surgical Associates joined and ultimately merged with Charlotte Surgical Group.

Dr. Godwin is board certified in general surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the North Carolina Surgical Society, the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and the American Hernia Society.

Dr. Godwin’s particular interests include laparoscopic surgery (performing the first laparoscopic gallbladder surgery and appendectomy in the Carolinas in 1990), abdominal hernia repairs and diseases of the breast.

Dr. Godwin’s outside interests include his six daughters (Ashley, Anna, Courtney, Kimberly, Amy and Mary-Chase), his wife Kim, tennis, fishing and hunting. He and his family are also very actively involved in church activities as members of Providence Baptist Church in Charlotte.

Dr. Godwin is Board Certified.
