Dr. Monson was born and raised in Michigan. He comes from a medical family. His father was a general practitioner who did surgery, delivered babies, and took care of all the children in the practice, even setting broken arms. His father practice medicine for 62 years until his death at age 90! He also had a sister who was a nurse and has a brother who is an orthopedic surgeon in Michigan.
Dr. Monson attended the University of Michigan for both undergraduate and medical school, then did his surgical residency at the University of Florida. He began practice in Charlotte with the Charlotte Surgical Group, P.A. in 1978. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of numerous other surgical societies. He was active in training residents at Carolinas Medical Center for 20 years and was a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at UNC-Chapel Hill.
He has been Chief of Surgery and Chief of Staff at University Hospital in the past and had numerous leadership positions at most of the hospitals in the Charlotte region. Dr. Monson enjoys doing the entire scope of general surgery, with particular interests in gastrointestinal surgery, surgical oncology (cancer), vascular surgery and trauma surgery. He also has a special interest and training in Hyperbaric Medicine. As are all physicians in Charlotte Surgical Group, he is skilled in minimally invasive surgery and does many procedures with the laparoscope, including anti-reflux, hernia, spleen and adrenal gland surgery.
Dr. Monson is the General Surgeon for the Charlotte Bobcats NBA Team.
Dr. Monson is Board Certified.
