After completing his undergraduate and medical school education in his home state of Missouri,
Dr. Thies traveled to Virginia for his surgical residency. He then moved to Rock Hill, South
Carolina in 1997 where he practiced the full breadth of general surgery for ten years. While there,
he introduced a variety of minimally invasive procedures to the community, including laparoscopic
colon resection, laparoscopic gastric bypass, and laparoscopic hernia repairs, as well as sentinel lymph
node biopsy for breast and skin cancers. In addition, he served as Chairman of the Department of
Surgery, as the Medical Director of the Surgical Weight Loss Program, and as a member of the
hospital’s Board of Directors.
Dr. Thies is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American
College of Surgeons. His special interests include minimally invasive surgery, cancer surgery, surgical
critical care and nutrition. He has extensive experience in the surgical management of:
- Breast Cancer and Benign Breast Disease
- Hernia Surgery
- Stomach Disease, including Acid Reflux Disease
- Gallbladder and Biliary Disease, including Pancreas
- Small Intestine Disease
- Colon Cancer and Diverticular Disease
- Anorectal Disorders, including Hemorrhoid Disease
- Thyroid and Parathyroid disease
- Skin Cancers and Skin Lesions
Dr. Thies joined Charlotte Surgical Group in 2007. He sees patients primarily in the Pineville
and Matthews offices and also serves as a Trauma Surgeon for Presbyterian Hospital. He welcomes
all new Charlotte area patients as well as his established patients from York County and surrounding
communities.
